What is Sabarimala Vratham?
Vratham is the word for fasting. Fasting is not only about refraining from eating certain food but also about control over many other activities. During these days, devotees eat only vegetarian food.

Usually, vratham has to be observed for 41 days before going to Sabarimala. It is advised to observe Vritham throughout the Mandala Kalam which begins on Vrishchikam 1st and ends on 11th or 12th of Dhanu, according to the traditional Malayalam Calendar. vratham is a method to cleanse thoughts and actions before going to Sabarimala temple.

This fast is to be taken up wholeheartedly with utmost dedication and the prescribed practices are to be observed without mending them to suit our convenience. It is generally a practice to observe the fast for a minimum of 42 days in order to ensure thorough cleansing of the body and mind before we step into the holy shrine of Lord Ayyappa at Sabarimala where He physically lives and contemplates on human well being. Devotees start their fast keeping their darshan date in mind so as to be present there on the 42nd or 48th day of the fast. 48 days complete the mandalam. It is therefore recommended to observe the fast for the entire duration however, a minimum of 42 is mandatory. Shortening the duration is normally not done by devotees bestowing sincerity.
The following practices are to be followed;-
1. Practice complete celibacy.
2. Refrain from Non Vegetarian food and intoxicating drinks.
3. Take bath twice a day and perform pooja at home by chanting the 108 names of the Lord.
4. Wear black or blue clothes and wash them separately so that purity is maintained.
5. Avoid sleeping on the mattress and use a woolen blanket to sleep on in case of harsh winter.
6. Refrain from cutting hair, cutting nails and shaving/trimming beards until the end of the pilgrimage.
7. Refrain from watching movies that invoke sexual pleasure.
8. Avoid arguments and unhealthy debates. It is important to be peaceful and in a meditative state of mind.
9. Avoid attending funerals.
10. Avoid socializing and refrain from hugging and hand shaking with the opposite gender.
11. Ensure that the Irumudi is never placed on the ground. It is to be carried with utmost care and reverence all the way up the 18 steps.
12. Speak soft words as the person observing the fast is believed to be Ayyappa Himself and is expected to be respected by one and all.
These are the practices which are to be followed with dedication and devotion. It is not meant to be a formal drill. However, there are certain standards of Hygiene and spiritual purity to be lived upto in order to protect the sanctity and divinity of the deity and therefore the fast is nothing but a purification process of the mind and the body to be spiritually eligible to see the lord.
